I had been wandering through the maze of woods and water for a week when she finally deigned to
appear.
"You've been walking in circles Howard," she observed tartly, jolting me awake from a brief nap. She
stood leaning against a tree with the artless grace of someone absolutely comfortable in her body.
Her smooth, unlined face was so different from my memories, I might not have recognized her
without that familiar tone of voice.
"It's called a search pattern Mabel." I rolled to my feet in one smooth motion. She wasn't the only
one who'd enjoyed a slow return to youth.
"If you say so. But I'm fairly certain you've covered this creek." She started off briskly without giving
me a chance to reply, flinging a "well, come on then" over her shoulder.
I harrumphed and followed. Her linen tunic and leggings looked carelessly donned but I knew the
moss green of the top closely matched her eyes and, stitched the way it was, it clung enticingly to
